Communication

     This final piece of the Take a Breath for Schools and Communities program content is significant.  It benefits your ability to speak about what you are experiencing; your thoughts and feelings around your mental health, physical health, performance and lifestyle. As well, there is a real need to be a listener for another- a fellow student, a friend, a workmate, another parent, or whomever you are choosing to practice these speaking and listening skills.  

'Speak to be heard and belong, listen to learn and allow.'

     Communication has always been a cornerstone of any self-improvement practice or self-development, whether internal communication with yourself or in this case we are seeking authentic communication with another in our community.

  • We communicate constantly; with our words, our body-language
  • 90% of communication is non-verbal
  • Clear communication is an art; it goes in both directions, from speaker to listener and back again
  • Clarity in communication often comes from our ability to listen, watch, and feel, staying in tune with the person in front of us

  • Watch a brief introduction to Co-Listening and communication with Children.
  • Read about what makes an authentic  listener.  As well, to recognize your role in the community as an effective listener.  Listening and Speaking skills
  • Ideally, practice listening/speaking in person- Face to Face.  If that is not possible, second best is face to face via technology, or maybe over the phone is next best.  Texting is the least effective, but if that is what you have, use it.
  • Parents!  Perhaps use these inquiry questions after each day your child completes the B.R.A.V.E. orientation audio recordings; read 5 Days of BRAVE Individual Inquiry
  • Begin to practice speaking and listening as a way to solidify the new patterns you are creating through Take a Breath.  Meet regularly (at least 1x a week, or even more often is better!) with your co-listener.  You can meet face-to-face as appropriate, or perhaps via technology, whichever way works for you.  Remember to keep it secure and comfortable for both of you.
  • Perhaps step up your commitment with 21-Days of Take a Breath.  For 3- weeks straight, every day, practice and check-in with your listener to let them know you have listened to your Take a Breath recording for that day (even a simple-"I did it!").
